Lucy Colwell
Wind Ensemble Conductor

Mrs. Colwell has been teaching music in the Tantasqua District since 1995.  Currently, she is the Instrumental Director teacher at Burgess Elementary School.  In previous years, she was the instrumental director at Wales Elementary and Tantasqua Junior & Senior High Schools.  Mrs. Colwell is a current faculty member at the Joy of Music Program in Worcester and conducts coaching sessions with the Worcester Youth Orchestra.  A graduate of Tantasqua, she has a deep sense of pride and connection to the Tantasqua communities.

Mrs. Colwell started her instrumental career playing the glockenspiel (really) in the Burgess Elementary Band and later switched to the French Horn in the 7th grade.  She went on to earn a Bachelor of Music Degree in Performance from Shenandoah Conservatory in Winchester, VA and spent two years as a graduate student at North Texas State University in Denton, TX.  In 1994 Mrs. Colwell earned an Artist Diploma from the Hart School of Music Hartford, CT and in 2002 received a Master of Arts Degree from Our Lady of the Elms in Chicopee, MA.  She has studied Horn  with David Jolley, Dr. William Scharenberg, Gregory Hustis, Dr. David Cottrell and Laura Kolck.

Mrs. Colwell also performs as a free-lance musician in her spare time.  Since 1994, she has been the Principal Horn with the Thayer Symphony Orchestra in Fitchburg MA, and for the past several years a substitute for the Hartford Symphony.  Mrs. Colwell is also a member of the horn section for the Claflin Hill Symphony, a professional orchestra based in Milford, MA. Mrs. Colwell has also performed in various small ensembles and was in the pit orchestras for many musical theater productions. While at the Hartt School, she had the opportunity to perform at Carnegie Hall under the direction of composer, John Rutter.  Mrs. Colwell has also performed for artists such as Dionne Warwick, James Ingram, Lorie Morgan, John Tesch, Clay Aiken and the Irish Tenors.  Mrs. Colwell is currently a member of the American Federation of Musicians Local 173 and Local 400, The Massachusetts Teachers Association and The National Association for Music Education.

----------------
As a teacher, my goal is to affect my students in a positive way.  I want my students to learn that every day is an opportunity to understand and discover new things.  I feel that music reaches students and offers authentic, individual accomplishments.   I believe that my expectations for educational and personal standards and responsibility, leads to a strong foundation for educational and personal growth.  I look forward to the journey; creating experiences and memories.

Sincerely,

Lucy Colwell
